The Girls/Boys Group at Fort St. James Secondary School hosted their second annual traditional Gala Event on Feb. 15 to raise funds for a group field trip in New Aiyansh, B.C.
The gala, held at the high school, was a tremendous success, attracting over 250 attendees eager for the live auction and late-night fundraising activities.
This event not only brought the community together, but also honoured the memory of Maddison Erickson, a cherished member of the Girls/Boys Group. The Louie Family Singers performed, adding a special touch to the evening.
Following the event, on Feb. 21, the students and teachers embarked on their trip to participate in the Hobiyee Full Moon Ceremony in New Aiyansh, B.C., which they had successfully funded.
Celebrated every February or March, this ceremony marks the appearance of the first crescent moon.
The high school students had a remarkable experience filled with cultural enrichment and connection.
Carla Martin, the group's organizer and coordinator, said the experience was immersive and left a lasting impression on everyone involved. The students were engaged and inquisitive, showcasing their enthusiasm as they learned about and celebrated Tsimshian culture, she added.
The fundraising gala will continue annually for the Girls/Boys Group, with each year's destination changing.
