Fort St. James Winterfest kicks off with sled dog races

The Caledonia Classic Sled Dog Race was the first event of the festivities

Winterfest in Fort St. James, B.C., kicked off with a bang the weekend of Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.

The annual Caledonia Classic Sled Dog Race took place at the Fort St. James Snowmobile Club, the first in a series of events scheduled in the district for this month.

The unique event is celebrating its 28th year, and combines both sprint and long-distance races into one action-packed weekend, making it the only race of its kind in Canada.

Mushers from across North America, including participants from Yukon and Saskatchewan, attended this year. A crowd of spectators huddled by the fire to watch the excitement.

The weekend was filled with diverse activities, featuring categories such as Jr. mushers, kid and mutt, in addition to distance and sprint races.
