Healthy Hearts Start in the Kitchen

Fireweed Collective Society is offering cooking sessions for individuals or couples, where one or both individuals have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure.

Have you or someone in your family recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Did the words "What do we do now?" come to mind? It’s not easy to change eating and cooking habits for improved health, especially in a community where access to fresh, healthy food is not always easy.

Fireweed Collective Society is offering cooking sessions for individuals or couples, where one or both individuals have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Participants in the "In This Together" program will learn to prepare healthy foods, read labels and nutrition information, access support programs, and examine recreation opportunities.

The group will meet one night a week for six weeks and prepare healthy, nutritious food. Each cooking session will have a featured "dinner speaker" who will talk about a physical activity that supports the healthy cooking program, such as walking or biking. Participants will leave the program with a cookbook and a Healthy Heart Toolkit to help maintain newly-acquired healthy eating skills at home and at work.

The program starts February 23, and runs for six Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Fireweed Kitchen. You must pre-register, and the cost for all six sessions is $10.00. For more information or to register please contact Brandi Hanterman or Kandace Kerr at 250-996-8089.
