Residents of Fort St. James may soon be able to purchase and use fireworks.
At this point in time, the sale and discharge of fireworks is prohibited in the District.
Melany Helmer, chief administrative officer said there is a new report going back to council that recommends lifting the prohibition on fireworks.
“So we are waiting to see what council’s position will be. At the last [regular public] meeting [March 26], they had some preliminary discussion and deferred it to the next meeting just because they had such a fat agenda package. We have in the mean time received information back in terms of other communities and what they do,” she said.
Helmer said the recommendation to council for the April 9 regular public meeting is that residents should be allowed to purchase fireworks at retail sales, for non-commercial fireworks. And the recommendation suggests letting people discharge fireworks if it is safe to do so, she added.
However, the final decision for discharge would lie with the fire chief.
“So if the fire chief was to put a ban on camp fire or fireworks, those kinds of activities, then residents would have to stop for that period of time because of the fire risk,” Helmer said.
