Police blotter: checkstops and ski rescue

The Fort St. James RCMP conducted in the early evening of New Years Eve. During that check, approximately 100 vehicles were checked resulting in three violation tickets, several warnings and an illegal drug seizure. A second checkstop was set up later in the evening and again only a few motor vehicle violations were noted, but overall drivers were in full compliance with the Motor Vehicle Act and everyone had sober drivers.

On January 7, 2018, at 4:30 pm, Fort St. James RCMP attended a call at the Murray Ridge Ski Hill about two males who had gotten lost while skiing the back side of the mountain. Due to the darkness and heavy snow, ski patrol, the hill groomer, police and search and rescue were called in to assist in the search.

At approximately 5:10 pm, the skiers were able to find their way to safety without incident.

Winter safety tips:

Create a trip plan and leave it with a friend or family member.

Carry essential items, a flashlight, cell phone, whistle and a map.

Dress for the weather and activity. Check the forecast and time of sunset.

Alcohol reduces the body’s core temperature - a risk for hypothermia.
