Renowned northwest B.C. artist Stan Bevan received a prestigious lifetime achievement award for his contribution to First Nations art in the province, from the BC Achievement Foundation (BCAF).

Bevan was among six recipients of the Fulmer Award in First Nations Art given by BCAF. He was announced as the recipient of the Award of Distinction for Lifetime Achievement, earlier this week, on Oct. 12.

Bevan, who was born and raised near Terrace, is of Tahltan-Tlingit and Tsimshian heritage and trained under renowned artists like Dempsey Bob at the beginning of his career.

Bevan is credited with bringing about the revival of Tlingit art and design. In 2006, Bevan was instrumental in the creation of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, which is located on the campus of the Northwest Community College (now Coast Mountain College) in Terrace.

Speaking from the Coast Mountain College campus, where he was present for the official opening of a new on-campus residence building, Bevan told the Terrace Standard that he was “honoured” by the award.

Bevan and many of his students from the Freda Diesing School contributed to the design elements and carvings inside the new building.

Talking about the honour bestowed on him by BCAF, he said, “There’s a lot of great work being done in the north and it’s being recognized and that’s why I’m pleased to accept this award and be a part of it,” said Bevan.
