It all began at a potlatch for the late Betsy Pius from Fort St. James.

As people gathered to remember Pius on May 8 , the idea to raise money for the victims in Fort McMurray just came up, according to Nak’azdli Band Chief, Fred Sam.

“We thought that we have to do something, we have to react. This is something that could happen to any of us,” Sam said.

Nak’azdli Band raised $2,446 and Chief Monk from Glazden Nation decided to match this amount as well.

The federal government has also agreed to match all donations raised.

“This is such a tragedy,” Sam said. “It feels so good to help.”
