Chocolate & roses not just for couples

While Valentine’s Day might not seem like much of a reason to celebrate for those of us who are single, it should be.

While Valentine’s Day might not seem like much of a reason to celebrate for those of us who are single, it should be.

Okay, that might seem a little strange to say, but remember that there are many people out there who are in relationships they don’t enjoy. People who stay in an unhappy marriage out of fear of being alone, fears of financial hardships, or for the sake of their children perhaps.

While I’m not in any way saying marriage is an unhealthy institution, I just think it can be unhealthy in some situations, and single people should take the time to appreciate their independence and freedom.

How do you celebrate singlehood? Well, why not buy yourself chocolates and take another single friend out to dinner? (Or even better, buy them chocolates and you don’t have to take home the guilt).

Or perhaps a restaurant filled with mooning couples would ruin the mood. Maybe the best option then is to invite over some single friends for a night in and raise a glass of wine to strength and independence.

Or you could spoil yourself with a treat like a massage or a pedicure, which I have heard even men enjoy.

Plan an adventure, go outside and do something fun that takes your breath away.

And I wouldn’t want to appear to be a Valentine’s Day Scrooge, but it would also be nice if everyone in a happy relationship didn’t feel the need to impress upon us single folk how we need to find a partner, or even worse, try and set us up. The good intentions are appreciated, but sometimes we’re on a journey that needs us to go solo for awhile. Some of us perhaps forever.

Don’t pity us, just allow us to appreciate what great things we do have and be our friend. After all, that is the best part of any good relationship, true friendship.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone.
