Tim McEwan, president and chief executive officer of Initiatives Prince George Development Corporation was the guest speaker at the local chamber of commerce annual general meeting on June 22. His presentation, entitled “Northern B.C.’s Decade” spoke of his optimism for the northern economy and of needing to have a “vision” for the region as well as the importance of emerging Asian markets.

An information event is being planned for July 12 at the Fort St. James Bicentennial Library to further educate the community. Kandace Kerr will be showing the film SPOIL and will have information about how this project could impact Fort St James.

Fort St. James District answers the call

After a call out at the anti-Enbridge pipeline information session and rally on June 24 the district council was asked what their plans were for involvement in the government’s environmental assessment joint review panel. Once they learned the district did not have to take a position for or against the project, only register before the deadline to be involved in the process, they immediately resolved to register to participate.

The cold, wet weather did not stop a determined crowd of about 30 to 40 people from checking out information on the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline and enjoying some live music. An afternoon event at Spirit Square and an evening concert on Necoslie Road were organized by community members concerned about the proposed project’s impact on the environment and community, and speakers came from as far away as Smithers, B.C. to get their information out there.

The Fort volunteer fire department has the only practice burn building of its kind north of Kamloops, so our local department not only gets to practice with good facilities, but also gets to train other departments.
